VSL Information

The Viking Soccer League (VSL) is an elementary soccer league which is open to both FPD and non-FPD students in 3K - 5th grade. The leagues primary objective is to offer the opportunity to try the sport of soccer in a relaxed and game-only environment. Teams are co-ed and the league uses a "rotating" roster each game. This format simply means that players rotate each week which offers players the chance to play with all players and for each coaching staff in their division. There is more information below about rotating rosters. Here are some points of interest for the VSL:
  • Kickoff is at 4:00pm on each gameday outlined. Games should be completed by 5:00pm.
  • Players need to provide their own water. Concessions will be available for every VSL game and both snacks and drinks will be available.
  • Current FPD varsity soccer players serve as game administrators and some also serve as referees for the older divisions.
  • Each player receives (2) VSL jerseys and soccer socks. Players would need to supply shorts (black recommended) and shin-guards. Cleats are recommended.
  • For the current VSL season, we will be using a "rotating" roster for all divisions. We have used this format the last several years for the older divisions and it has been very positive. Divisions and teams are randomly formed through the first half of the season. Remaining game rosters are posted after the third game of the season. The team color assignments for each game are outlined on the individual team pages. Here are some details regarding the VSL rotating rosters:. This type of rotating league is advantageous for several reasons:
    • Team rosters change every game, which allows players to play with many different players.
    • Having teams that continuously change eliminates one team potentially being dominant every week, or one team being much worse than the others.
    • Every player will have multiple chances to play with each individual coach in their division.
    • For the first half of the season, players are randomly divided by male/female, but not by skill or grade level. As the season goes on, we are able to further identify players that need to be divided to balance competition, particularly in the older divisions. Once the first half games are completed, we will post the team assignments for the last half of the season. The overall goal is to have more evenly played games, particularly in the later part of the season, and the rotating teams help make this happen.
  • IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT EACH PLAYER WEARS THE ASSIGNED COLORED JERSEY EACH WEEK.
  • Each gameday there will be a very brief warmup period and a group devotional. It is recommended that all players arrive at the field by 3:40 and the warmup would begin around 3:45.
  • Games are played on various small fields. Field sizes are based on age and number of participants in each division. Players will not change fields during the season.
  • Older divisions play with larger goals and goalkeepers. Younger divisions play to smaller goals and no goalkeepers.
  • Public restrooms are located on the right side of the concessions stand.
  • There are bleachers that can be used to watch the VSL games.
    • We ask that fans watching older groups only watch from the bleachers. Those games can be easily viewed from this area and the older divisions will be centrally located in the playing area.
    • Younger teams (3K - K) will be playing on fields that will allow fans to watch from the outside area. There is no seating for these areas so any fans wanting to make use of this space would need to bring a chair. We have found it beneficial to have the youngest player's parents close to where they are playing.
  • We are not able to allow ANY non-VSL participants or coaches in the main playing area. This area is defined as any area from the exterior of the 3 exterior fields in towards the center of the complex. There will be a red line around the area that needs to be avoided. and anyone entering this area will be asked to find an alternate space. There are a few areas that we plan to have parents watch games outside these lines. These are:
    • Area on the concessions stand side of the field, just inside the large catch net.
    • Area along the fence of the baseball field (2 fields can be seen from this area).
    • Area along the Foster Road side of the complex
